What is FFT?
Family Functional Therapy (FFT) is a short-term, high-quality intervention program with a primary focus on youth aged 11-18 at risk of, or already demonstrating, emotional and behavioral problems. FFT is a family-based prevention and intervention program that brings family members together to facilitate constructive communication and problem solving.
Why FFT?
- Evidence-Based: FFT is grounded in decades of clinical research, proving its effectiveness in transforming the lives of troubled youth and their families.
- Family-Centered: Unlike approaches that focus solely on the individual, FFT understands the family as a system and recognizes that changes in one aspect of the system can bring about changes in others.
- Cost-Effective: As a short-term intervention typically ranging from 8-12 sessions, FFT is designed to be more affordable and less resource-intensive than other treatment options.
How Does FFT Work?
- Engagement Phase: The first step aims to reduce resistance and engage the family in the treatment process.
- Behavior Change Phase: This involves skill training for youth and their family, teaching them how to improve communication and solve problems more effectively.
- Generalization Phase: In the final phase, families are aided in connecting with extended family and supportive systems to maintain the positive changes over the long term.
Who Can Benefit?
- Youth demonstrating delinquent behavior
- Families in conflict
- Youth with substance abuse issues
- Families undergoing significant life transitions
By addressing the root causes and the family dynamics, FFT not only resolves the immediate issues but also builds a strong foundation for long-term success.
